DOs
An Extended Writing Essay should be 2 pages long. However, it can be longer and it can be shorter. It depends on the essay.
In an exam you should spend 10 minutes planning it and 20 minutes writing it.
The Extended Writing Essay is always about FACTS. Just write the facts. You do not make or defend an argument in this exercise. You can narrate.
Each of the three, possibly four, sub-questions are numbered. Use the same numbering in your answering.
Leave a line between each paragraph. Clearly label when the next section begins. Yes, you must answer them in the same order, (they tend to lead on to the next one.)
Always go bak to the question. Use the words in the question throughout to keep you focused.
and DON'Ts
Don’t make broad-sweeping, generalized statements which are based on personal opinion and emotion. This is not about you or what you think or feel. (Even if the question is phrased something along the lines of "Why do you think the....")
Don’t preach! It is not your role to tell us what is good or bad, right or wrong.
Never write with headings and sub-headings. Although you must number your paragraphs.
Never write an introduction. Go straight to a) and start answering it.
Never write in point form. You must write proper sentences and form proper paragraphs. You can have more than one paragraph to answer a section.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Each answer (paragraph) must have 8 to 10 deliberate facts, or more. Proper historical terms, names, dates, places, events, facts! So it is worth your while to plan your essay with a list of all the important facts before you start writing so that you remember to include everything! Do not fall into the trap of mentioning one point that you go on and on about. Keep explanations brief, rather get to the next fact, and then the next....
* There is an overall, or main, question that accompanies the sub questions. Some students like to answer the main question at the end of their essay. There is nothing wrong with writing a couple of sentences that answers the overall/main question as a conclusion paragraph.
* There is also always a visual stimulus (picture) that accompanies the sub questions. At some point, in at least one paragraph, you must refer to that stimulus. You must link the picture to one of your facts.
Did I mention that the Extended is all about FACTS?
